Dreamerland Crafts Copic Speed Coloring

Hi everyone! Happy Memorial Day - this day, in the United States, is one of reflection and remembrance of those who have fought and lost their lives defending our freedom. While it has come to also signify the beginning of Summer and Barbecue season, it is important to remind myself of the true meaning of this day every year. For me, it means taking my family to the Memorial Day ceremony at the National Cemetery  

With this on my mind, I created this card. At the National Cemetery here, you will see rows upon rows of simple white crosses. This was the inspiration for my card. It's kind of a weird card, I'll admit, because I'm not sure who I would honestly send this to, but inspiration comes from anything and I had this vision for my card and I do love the way it turned out. Instead of a card,  this might look nice in a simple frame, perhaps given as a gift to someone or in honor of someone you lost while serving our nation. You could easily add a name and dates in lieu of the sentiment I used.  

Anyhoo, enough rambling, I created a simple Copic speed coloring video showing how I colored this sweet image. The image I used is from Dreamerland Crafts are new company we started carrying recently and I think all the images are super sweet. They remind me of children's book illustrations. This is the first one I picked up but I know I will be getting more. I hope you enjoy the video!

Of course, I used Wink of Stella and was actually able to get a pretty good photo of the shimmer! I just love it on my images - the perfect simple embellishment every time.

How to Color on Vellum with Copic Markers

Hi Everyone! It is my day on the MarkerPop blog and I wanted to try something different today. Vellum is pretty popular in papercrafting right now and I wanted to try a new technique by coloring on it with my Copic markers. Vellum is a slick surface so there are a couple of ways to approach this when you want to color a stamped image with your Copic markers. Both techniques involve stamping your image and flipping the vellum over to the back to color. I don't have a video for you today but I did take some photos of the process for you. Let's get started.

To do this you will need:

Vellum

Stamps

Copic Markers

Tsukineko Versamark Ink (embossing ink pad of some type)

Embossing Powder (color of your choice)

Embossing Buddy (something to prep your surface for embossing)

To start, I cut down my vellum to 4.25 x 11. I wasn't sure how big I wanted my panel to be but I knew I wanted to fit it on a card front so this seemed to be a good size for me to work with to start stamping. I prepped my surface using the embossing  buddy. This places a thin coat of powder on the paper so your embossing powder will only stick to the places you have stamped. Next I started stamping my pattern. I am using the Circle Scribble Flowers by My Favorite Things. I used the 3 different sizes of flowers and two sizes of leaves to fill in.    

I stamped my images in Tsukineko Versamark Ink and used Imagine Crafts White Embossing Powder. I am fairly new to embossing, what can I say, I started in this hobby by coloring! So, a good time I've learned is to let your heat tool get good and hot before bringing it to your paper - especially vellum! It only takes about 15-20 seconds and then you can bring the heat to your embossing and watch it melt really fast. This helps minimize the warping to the vellum. It will look like this when finished.     

You do not want to color on the front where your embossing is for two reasons. ONE: vellum is slick and your markers will take a bit to dry completely - and honestly, it can still smear even once dry. Coloring on the back eliminates this. TWO: Embossing can damage the nibs on your markers so you really don't want to color on the embossed side. If you do (on other types of paper since I know a lot of people like to emboss their images before coloring) just take care along the edges of the embossing. So, turn your vellum over and you'll be able to see exactly where your images are to start coloring.     

For this technique, I do a very simple color blend. Two at the most. Vellum is not going to blend like your other card stock so it just is pointless to try to blend (well, it was for me, I tried!) I found that keeping it simple is the key to this fun technique. So, I chose one color for my flower and another for my leaves. I ended up choosing another color for the sky around my flowers in the end. Check the end of this post for a list of all the colors used on this project. This is how it will look from the back. Not too impressive. ;)     

BUT, this is how it looks from the front!!! So pretty! I think it is so elegant. Don't stress about brush strokes. I find this adds to the texture and unique look with this technique. 

    

I decided to fill in the white space with blue and did VERY simple outline shading with two shades a bit darker than what I first laid down. I simply outlined the leaves and the scribble flowers with this darker color. I love the way it looks more painted from the front now.       

Here is a close up of the colored vellum on my card front. I layer it on some book text card stock. To adhere the vellum, I used tiny dots of Tombow Mono Multi Liquid Glue in the corners and behind the stamping. This helps to camouflage the adhesive but I found that with the pattern peeking through and the coloring, you don't even  notice it.    

   

Here is another look at my completed card. I love it! I have also tried this with Gold and Silver embossing and it looks very elegant. I will share those on my blog at a later date once the sun starts shining again around here and I can get better pictures of that embossing. Prima Bloom Girl Mixed Media Watercolor Canvas

Hi everyone! Today I'm up on Jamie Dougherty's blog with this project that I'm sharing today. I created a watercolor mixed media canvas using the stamp Summer from the Prima Bloom Collection. I was thinking about it and out of ALL the stamps released, I honestly think Summer is my favorite! I love her hair and how it cascades over part of her face like it's hiding part of her soul. Anyway, this canvas is really easy to make - seems clean and simple has made its way into my mixed media as well. Even though there are tons of layers here, it is all with different colors and paints. I would have loved to capture my process on video but I'm having technical difficulties with the tripod set up at the moment. So, I tried to capture in pictures for you as much as I could. 

First, I grabbed some products that I wanted to use on my canvas. I am using a Master's Touch 8x10 Watercolor Canvas Panel. I pulled out some gel medium and a stencil but ended up not using them. I went simple with this canvas focusing more on the painting than adding extra layers of paper and texture mediums like I originally anticipated.

I stamped my image using Archival Ink in Watering Can. I wanted to keep this canvas soft so I opted for this grey waterproof ink rather than black. I don't have a block large enough for this stamp so I just inked it up and pressed it evenly to the canvas with my hands. I got a few extra spots of ink but I think that just adds to the texture and the coloring will cover that up so I'm not worried about it.

I wanted to use my new gelatos on this canvas to watercolor with so I pulled out the Pastels and Metallics set to start with and mixing the peach and white directly to the canvas I started to paint in her skin. When I'm painting with Gelatos, I scribble the pigment directly to the canvas and then spritz with water. Using my fingers I spread the color around. I use this same technique to create the background (Aqua Dolce, Fig, Teal) with lots of water to create drips.

I wanted more depth and dimension to this image so I pulled out my Derwent Inktense pencils and used them to create more shading and depth on her skin. I also used them to color the foliage in her hair. At this point, I got into the zone and forgot to take more process photos! I colored her hair using two different colors of gelatos (Iced coffee and Caramel) I love how mixing the metallics with the pastels created such depth and dimension in her hair!

Here is a close up of the finished piece. I was inspired by the Simon Says Stamp Monday Alphabet Challenge (using letters X, Y, Z) so I pulled out an alphabet stencil and focused on adding texture to my canvas with the XYZ portions. To do this, I pulled some gelato color (Iced Chai) on to a baby wipe and wiped it through the stencil. I love the effect this technique has on a canvas and it's a great way to use Gelatos rather than a spray with your stencils.

Altered journal with Pink Paislee & The Greeting Farm

Hi Everyone! It is a drizzy Monday morning here but this bright altered journal brightens up the day! I made this for my daughter…I want to give her something special as she is about to turn 10…not sure how that happened, but it did! I used to love writing when I was younger - journals, poems, etc. It helped during those teenage angst years to write down all the crazy and jumbled up feelings. I actually still have all my writings from those years though I have little desire to read any of it! LOL Anyway, I purchased a small 5x7 journal from Michael's and altered it using some newly acquired Pink Paisley goodies that I won - I am in love with the Citris Bliss collection - the colors are so bright and cheerful! I  monogramed it with my daughter's initials using the Thickers from the collection - this gold is seriously gorgeous!

This deer is absolutely the cutest from the Wood Friends stamp set by The Greeting Farm. I stamped him first with Memento Toffee Crunch ink to color using the "no lines" technique with my Copic Markers. I really like how he turned out and I love the  matching die for this stamp set to make fussy cutting a breeze!

Copic Coloring on Kraft Paper - My Favorite Things

Hi Everyone! Carisa here with you today and I made this super cute card using some My Favorite Things goodies. When this cute little You Gnome Me set was released, I just HAD to have it! You get that way, too?! haha, you know what I mean. I wanted to use it to make a simple masculine card for my dad's birthday. I decided I would do some Copic coloring on Kraft card stock. It has been awhile since I have done this and I had forgotten what a neat effect it can give your stamped images. 

I created a video with you as well showing my process with this technique as well as a little bit using the new Copic Hex Chart by Sandy Allnock. This was probably the first time I really used it in my coloring and I can see it as a go to resource for myself and anyone using Copic markers whether you are a seasoned colorist or just starting out. I talk a little bit more about why my color choices were different using the chart as opposed to how I would normally pick colors. Also, since I hadn't colored on Kraft card stock in so long, you'll see that I start out going light to dark (my usual way of coloring) but then switched to laying down my darkest color first just because I was started to get some bleeding issues with the card stock. When coloring on Kraft card stock you want to pick more vibrant colors than what you would usually go for (most notably my skin colors are very dark and would be very dark on white paper) since the Kraft will soak up a lot of that pigment just by its dark nature.  

To create my sentiment, I pieced a few stamp sets together. I probably would re do it as I wasn't exactly happy with the way it turned out but I just went with it. In the future, when I piece together sentiments like this to create my own, I will probably stamp it on some scrap paper first to make sure I like the alignment and the way it flows before stamping on my card.

Paper Smooches - Instagram Giveaways!

We had no idea what we would be getting and when we received our packages from Kim, we were both floored by her generosity with this:

Amazing, right?! Well, Tracie and I chatted a bit and we decided to join up and use the product we received to see what we would create in our own style using the same things! I am so excited to see what she came up with! I thought it might be fun to use our goodies together and thank Kim for this amazing prize. Plus, it gave me the excuse to use all my goodies right away when I may have otherwise hoarded them! ;)

My first card uses 2 of the stamp sets and 1 of the dies (Kudos, Group Hugs, Big Friend Word die). Since it IS Watercolor Wednesday around here, I went with a watercolor background using some Faber-Castell gelatos. I used two colors from the new pastel set and I love the soft subtle colors of these gelatos. So pretty. I actually used this same technique to create Mother's Day cards this year. 

I love popping up my die words and the easiest way to do this is by layering the die multiple times. I used plain white cardstock for my first 2 layers and then the word grain die for the top layer. It is super easy to do and I love the dimension it gives to my card. I love the encouraging words in the Group Hugs stamp set; it's going to be one of my go to sets to send out encouraging cards to friends and family.

My second card uses 1 stamp set and 1 die (Cute Fruit, Hearts Die). I have to admit, this set is not one I probably would have been drawn to, but after thinking about it awhile, I thought I would do more watercoloring. I chose the pear stamp and stamped it with Distress Ink onto watercolor paper. I wiped away one side to keep the watercolor stamping soft and create a more hand painted look. I used a wet paint brush to move the color around and also added some extra distress inks in some oranges and pinks to give it some more realistic texture. Once it was dry (I cheated and used my heat tool to speed up the process) I stamped the eyes and glasses and I was totally smitten by the way my vision was turning out! I used the Hearts die to inlay some coordinating pattern paper on the bottom of my image panel and stamped the sentiment on the pattern paper. 

Some glossy accents on the glasses and enamel dots finished up this clean and simple card! These Cute Fruit stamps have definitely stolen my heart and I can't wait to use this same technique to watercolor the rest of them. 

Ok, hope you are still here! My third and final card features Hot Concoctions. I made this one for the current Paper Smooches Sparks Picture Perfect Challenge. I was inspired by the chevron and wood grain in the photo..and of course the coffee…always coffee! 

I love my coffee so this stamp set just makes me happy! I love the sentiment and I thought adding one of the sentiments from the Group Hugs set just completed the card. You could definitely send this to a friend who might be having a bad day to give them encouragement. I love how you all the stamps just blend together perfectly throughout the Paper Smooches line, you can mix and match to your hearts content. 

No watercoloring on this one, I did some very simple Copic shading on the coffee cup with my grey's and a little bit of paper piecing for some extra color and interest.

All in all, I am so happy with the way my cards turned out, my favorite surprisingly is the Cute Fruit one! I think because it pushed me creatively outside of my "normal", I was able to grow and I will definitely be using the stamps more as well as the technique.

Watercolor with Inktense Pencils - The Greeting Farm

Hi, everyone! Carisa with you here today and I am sharing how to watercolor your stamped images with Derwent Inktense Pencils. I love these pencils for a more controlled watercolor look and I have a video sharing how I do that below. I am using these adorable new stamps from The Greeting Farm - they are available today and this set is called Tweety Pie. I think these birds are so cute and just so much fun to color no matter what medium you are using. There is also a matching die set available to go with this stamp set that makes fussy cutting so much easier and I love the open steel cut dies that make lining up your stamped images after you've stamped and colored them so easy to get that perfect cut!

If you'd like to try this technique yourself, here is what you will need:

• 140lb Canson Watercolor Paper

I have been a little bit obsessed with creating wall art using embroidery hoops! I picked up these tiny ones to create Christmas ornaments and I think I will still use this as one even though it's not necessarily Christmas Themed. These are TINY - 3"x3". I thought it would be a fun size to create with these stamps and I also share how I did that in the video.

Here is a close up of the coloring. Like I mentioned, I love the controlled watercolor look I can get with the Derwent Inktense Pencils. They layer beautifully because with these particular pencils, once the water you lay down is dry, these become permanent unlike traditional watercolor which can be reactivated by adding more water. That's how I was able to get such beautiful blending between the purple and the yellow without it turning to a murky color.

How to Color White with Copic Markers - The Greeting Farm

Hi everyone! Carisa here with you today with an adorable baby card featuring The Greeting Farm stamps! I just adore the Build A Onesie sets and they even have an available coordinating die set now which I just had to have - it really makes fussy cutting so much easier on these smaller images in the set. I used what might be vintage October Afternoon papers at this point. LOL I swear, I have got to stop this hoarding thing. I held on to this paper even when I pretty much sold off my entire craft room a year ago just because I love my boys and my girls love space…so, here I am using it on a baby card. haha Don't ask! Who knows. Anyway, it's still super cute and I love the colors. I've also pulled out some My Favorite Things Blueprints dies to build my card. I can't say enough about how much I love these dies! They are an awesome investment for every single card maker. I used to never use dies and now with these I can't stop - it also has inspired me to use other dies in combination with them! 

I thought using this set would be a great time to show you how I color, yes, color white using Copic Markers. Sounds funny to say I'm coloring white, but really you still want to give that illusion of depth and dimension to your image so you need to add some shadows and it is really easy to use. I give you three different combinations and two techniques on how I do this in a video. Here is a close up of the onesie - you can see how the subtle shadows of the Warm Greys just around the edge of the image and blended in toward the center really gives some added dimension and you still look at the image as white but it has some pop to it. For the inside of my card (which I forgot to photograph) I used some sentiments from the Mama Elephant - Just Hatched stamp set. This is another great baby set with some adorable images!
